Paciencia

Well, I guess I'll have to write something after all to explain this new series of works intended to take me through "silent September". I've been drawing people in the Subway for years. I love it. There is such an amazing variety of humans in New york City, it would be almost unethical not to take advantage of it as an artist. I have to draw them while they're reading books or sleeping because when people realize you're drawing them, things can get complicated in a variety of ways. Most times, I only have time to draw their faces, and I have to do it quickly because, for all I know, they could be getting off the train at the next stop. I have hundreds of faces in my sketchbooks. For a while in 1997, I worked further on these drawings at the studio, giving bodies to the faces and completing the picture according to my fancy. Then I glued the drawings onto pieces of wood in order to give them more presence. It works well and it eliminates the need to frame them. I revised them in 2003, to make them more clear and easier to read. Now you know. Click on it for actual size view.

wow I can just see a gallery setup like a subway car where the viewers come in and sit between the pieces of wood with people glued on them.. you could have conversations... I love your sketch and glue ..brilliant.
